YOU could never accuse Toyota of being camera shy. Like its predecessor, the Japanese maker's latest people carrier uses imaging technology to help drivers overcome potential hazards.

The last generation Toyota Verso was the first mass produced car to make use of a front mounted camera to see round corners - not literally, but to help improve the view at junctions.

Now technophobes will be delighted to learn that top-of-the-range versions of the latest Verso, which debuts in UK dealerships this week, come with a rear view camera which projects an image through a tiny screen mounted in the interior mirror and is designed to aid parking.

The third generation of the seven-seat Verso has a new look inside and out and is bigger than before with more space for rear seat passengers and luggage.

The eight model initial line-up offers a choice of improved 1.8 litre petrol and two litre diesel engines mated to six speed manual gearboxes with a Continually Variable (CVT) automatic transmission available on high end versions of the petrol-engined model.

A 2.2-litre 150hp diesel engine with Toyota's four-way DPNR clean diesel catalyst system will join the range later this year, offered with a new six-speed automatic transmission.

Three trim levels are available - T2, TR and T Spirit. Entry level models come equipped with five airbags including curtain airbags protecting all three rows of seats, air conditioning, four-speaker audio with steering wheel-mounted controls, flat folding rear seats, electrically adjustable heated door mirrors, electric front windows and body coloured bumpers and door handles.

Prices start at £16,750 for the entry level T2 petrol model with mid-range TR versions - expected to be the biggest sellers - starting from £17,750 and top of the range T Spirit models from £19,475. Diesel models cost £1,200 more than their petrol equivalents while CVT auto transmission adds £1,000, but is only available mated to petrol-engined models.
