Here's an example fault on the TOYOTA Yaris (2006 -2011)

What to look for:

Test drive the car. Check for rough running of the engine at idle or excessive black smoke coming from the exhaust pipe under power. Also check for a smell of fuel in the cabin or any evidence of the engine running hot.

What it means:

If you find this fault it is possible that the EGR (Exhaust Gas Re-Circulation) valves have become blocked with carbon from the exhaust. The EGR valves regulate engine temperature using the gas from the exhaust. They can get blocked with exhaust deposits which can block the inlet manifold. This causes the rough running and black smoke.

What to do

If you find this fault and the car is under warranty (3 years/60,000 miles) then Toyota may repair the car for free. Otherwise try to negotiate a discount of £400 off of the price of the car.
