Hi
We have a 17 yr old son is 6'3" with very long legs. What is considered safe driver leg room?
My husband is trying to cram him into our 2002 Vauxhall Corsa Comfort - his legs are rubbing steering wheel and he can't straighten his knees when depressing pedals and difficulty moving feet from pedal to pedal.
This has got to be unsafe but what is the "standard".
Your advice would be appreciated.
Answer
Hi
Being just over 6'3" with long legs too , I understnad this problem.
The answer is usually to pick a car where the seat is low, and the footwell long. So sportscars are often ver comfortable becasue the driver's legs stretch out in front.
NCAP cover leg safety in their crash tests, but they usedummies that are designed to represent an average human, rather than a taller-than-average driver. So I can't say whether your son will be at a greater risk than anyone else.
Interesting NCAP while the Corsa achieves a 4 star rating from NCAP, which is very good, they do comment on leg protection: "[Vauxhall] fits a composite plate behind the steering wheel shroud to cushion the driver's knees. While any attempt to protect the driver is welcomed, this did not fully satisfy Euro NCAP requirements. The design did not overcome the threat of upper leg injuries or penetrating injuries to the knees. "
