THE latest versions of the Vauxahll Vectra seem to have everything going for them.
They look impressive, are really spacious and their performance matches the looks - smooth and refined. Not only that, they are also very practical.
Indeed all Vectra models, and not only estates, are designed with everyday practicalities in mind and are into "flexible space".
So this big saloon has a load space of 1,050 litres. It's courtesy of its 60/40 split-folding rear seat, which incorporates a folding centre armrest.
Both parts of the seat can be be folded down in one movement, without removing the head restraints.
Furthermore, you can personalise the car to suit your needs even more through the "Vauxhall By Design" scheme.
That is a comprehensive line-up of option packs and accessories which allow you to have a car that truly reflects your personality and is in tune with your needs.
The new Vectra has a fresher, sharper and altogether more purposeful look than the old version.
Dramatic new lines, significantly improved driving dynamics and enhanced interior quality all combine to deliver two of the most important qualities you look for in a car - comfort and control.
It comes in hatchback, estate or saloon versions, with me taking the later for my test drive.
The engine seems very capable, with you getting plenty of pulling away power, and it cruises enjoyably.
The car is satisfyingly quiet and purrs along fairly effortlessly, although I have to say I had no occasion to pack it with very heavy suitcases or other heavy goods.
Nevertheless, exterior noise seems well suppressed.
The Vectra has always had a solid reputation as a good riding car, even if, in the past, it hasn't bowled you over with its appearance.
But now its looks have improved and the handling is better than ever thanks to suspension and steering refinements.
And a glance at the fuel consumption show official figures returning nearly 38mpg on the combined cycle - not bad for a car of this size.
The Vectra's cabin looks and feels solidly built, with sturdy trim and hard-wearing materials throughout.
The steering wheel adjusts for height and reach and the comfortable seats are easily adjustable in several different directions.
The inside has been updated to become more driver focused, but the facia, while clean and traditional, could possibly do with a bit more flair.
Vauxhalls generally have a reputation for good reliability, too, but if anything does go wrong it should be cheap to repair.
There are some pretty impressive specifications on most models including remote control security alarm and central deadlocking, electronically operated front windows and adjustable - heated door mirrors.
You also get an anti-dazzle rear view mirror, rain sensitive windscreen wipers, air conditioning and an impressive six-disc CD autochanger
Every model has a good safety equipment list which includes driver, passenger and side airbags, curtain bags front and rear, anti-lock brakes and anti-whiplash head restraints.
