WITH very cheap running costs, a wide range of engines and trim and strong lasting qualities, it is not surprising that the Vauxhall Vectra has won so many accolades.
But check the prices and don't pay too much. They depreciate fast and there are hundreds to choose from. If one seems too expensive, move on to another.
Post 2002 models are now down to around £2,000 and with all the big depreciation already past, make great bargains second-hand.
Petrol engines are 1.8 to 3.2 V6 with 120 to 208bhp and diesels are from 1.9 to 3.0-litre V6 with 98 to 174bhp.
The saloon was launched at the same time as the hatch and works out about £150 less.
Gear boxes are five or six speed and go for LS or better spec to have a few of the right toys.
The 98bhp 2.0-litre diesel is not up to the weight performance-wise but is very economical.
Interior
The ride is comfortable much of the time but just a little unsettled at slower speeds. Safety is excellent, with good handling and road holding, loads of airbags and stability control on most.
Interior space is excellent but it is not as good to drive as the Mazda 6 or the Ford Mondeo.
