Question

Can you help me with this problem please?

There is a smell of fuel after running around 5 miles at a constant speed. Tick over increases to around 1500 revs. If I blib the trottle revs go back to normal but with a strong smell of fuel. Also the car does not readily start when semi warm unless you put accearator pedal down to floor.

Answer

Many of these had a carbon canister as part of the emissions control system – it absorbs fumes form the fuel tank while the car is stationary and burns them off whne it’s running. It’s all controlled by a valve in the engine bay which can stick, giving just the symptoms you describe.
