I've had this car for 3 years its a 2001 model the problem is the exhaust emission light comes is on (stays on) the car then missfires runs 'rough' under power then clears.
I've had it in a garage fault comes up with generic missfire on No2 cylinder so this could cover a number of options gel pack sticking valve etc, could this be connected to the EGR valve sticking.
I've never been to happy with the MPG 32 town or motorway as I've also cantacted Vaxhaull they are less than helpfull couls you advise many thanks.
Answer
If the EGR valve was sticking, it could clear, but this wouldn’t be associated with just one cylinder. The exhaust emission light comes on because of the misfire, not the other way around – the computer is detecting a fault before you are. It could be a sticking valve, but that’s quite hard to detect without some dismantling. Sticking valves are becoming more common than they were and are usually caused by people using cheap fuel with minimal or poor quality detergent.
Assuming you have checked the obvious things, try two tankfulls of BP Ultimate or Shell V Power. They could well improve your mpg problem as well.
