What to look for:

Check the paperwork to see if the cam belt has been changed on schedule. On most engines the cam belt must be changed within 4 years or 40,000 miles.

What it means:

If the cam belt and associated parts (ask to have a cam belt kit fitted) have not been changed, and the mileage is over these boundaries, the cam belt is likely to fail soon. Usually the engine has to be replaced or at least re-built after a cam belt failure.

What to do

Ensure that the cam belt is changed before the car is driven anywhere if it is coming close to its interval. Changing the belt will cost £250.

What to look for:

Test drive the car. Make sure that there a no flat spots in the power delivery and that the car does not go into ‘limp home’ mode. This will be characterized by a sharp drop in power delivery or a total shut down of the engine, coupled with a flashing engine warning light on the dashboard.

What it means:

The 2.2 petrol engine fitted to some Zafira models has a known problem with the fuel pressure regulator and the fuel pump itself, occasionally this can have knock on effects to the timing chain. It can be very expensive to diagnose and repair.

What to do

If you find this fault and the car is under warranty (3 years/60,000 miles) then have a Vauxhall dealer check the car thoroughly before purchase. If not then have the car examined by a qualified mechanic. It can cost £2000+ to sort this problem out. We would recommend keeping a warranty on this car - go to www.warrantyexpert.co.uk
