Volkswagen Beetle 1.9 TDI - Volkswagen Beetle Car Review

Review

IT'S hard to believe the resurrection of the new Volkswagen Beetle was almost eight years ago, but one thing is for sure - the car immortalised in the popular Herbie films is still a huge hit with buyers.

With its Tardis-like interior - created by the very forward placed windscreen - the Beetle still has the little vase, still has the round display dials and still has all those cute little touches that are, oh, so VW.

But today's model also boasts air con, a CD player, parking sensors and heated seats - concepts that were not even pipedreams when the original Beetles were sanctioned way back in 1949.

Despite its modern interior, there is still the classic styling always associated with the Beetle - which has broadened its appeal and is now driven by a much bigger cross section of the population than just students and artists.

It is a nippy little drive although the acceleration is never going to blow your socks off and while the handling is good both in and around town and on the open road, it is quite a noisy drive - still, that's where the excellent sound system compensates!

There are a number of storage compartments scattered throughout and the boot will comfortably hold a number of overnight bags, although larger suitcases are a definite no no.

The Beetle features numerous top-of-the-range safety specifications including anti-lock brakes, electronic stabilisation programme, traction control, a rigid shell and front and side airbags.

Admittedly, the Beetle has never been cheap, but a factor would-be buyers need to consider is the impressive engine beneath that curved hood - if reputation is anything to go on, the Beetle will run and run.

And another thing that is guaranteed to buyers will be the fun element, especially in the summer when other Beetle-owners flash their lights and wave madly at you.
