What to look for:

The only symptom of a failing lambda sensor is poor fuel consumption, which you will be unlikely to detect on a test drive.

What it means:

Faulty lambda sensors are common reasons for Beetle's failing the emissions test in the M.O.T. The sensor will have to be replaced.

What to do

If the car has recently passed its M.O.T. the sensor will be fine. If it is coming up to M.O.T. you may want to have a garage complete an emissions test (Cost: £50). However, as a new sensor will only cost £90 you could wait until the M.O.T.

What to look for:

Look under the car for drops of oil on the floor after it has been standing for at least ten minutes.

What it means:

Oil leaks on a Beetle are the first sign that an engine is getting to the end of its life. The first place they start from are the flywheel oil seal behind between the gearbox and engine.

What to do

Having the oil seal repaired will cost £10 and may fix the problem for a while. But if it indicates a bigger problem, the engine will eventually need replacing. Vege (from Holland) engines are available for £1,500 fitted.
