Right Car Right Price: 3 cars for when the fuel petition fails - Volkswagen Golf Car Review

So fuel duty is due to go up by 2p in September (that’s right, just weeks away) and V.A.T. will go back up not long after that. That’s why thousands have joined Used Car Expert’s online petition and we will be presenting it – probably in vain – to the Government this week.

So what to do? Used car prices have been more stable in recent months than at the end of last year, so it may be a good time to dump the big petrol guzzling engine and trade in for one of these thrifty (read dull) family cars that claim over 40 mpg. We’ve picked three that are, as well as being thrifty on fuel, available at attractive prices:

Volkswagen Golf

Here is a Golf that once again has become good to drive, is spacious and safe. It isn't cheap new and that seems to be the same situation on the used market. Buy diesel we say.
Best used buy: 1.9 TDI
Most economical: 1.9 TDI (53 MPG)
UsedCarExpert.com checks: 18
Used Car Expert magazine: A 2007 1.9 TDI SE with average mileage of 29,588 will be around £10,587

Vauxhall Astra

For Vauxhall, when the Astra launched it was a major step forward with lots of clever technology. Strong engines space and sharp handling make it a good alternative to the Focus.
Best used buy: 1.7 CDTi
Most economical: 1.7 CDTi (58mpg )
UsedCarExpert.com checks: 7
Used Car Expert magazine: A 2007 1.7 CDTi with average mileage of 24,846 will be around £7,838.

Volvo S40

Bargain buy that is tough and safe. S40 saloon is cheaper than the V40 estate which is compact rather than cavernous. Better than something with a more ordinary badge.
Best used buy: 2.0 D
Most economical: 2.0 D (52.3mpg)
UsedCarExpert.com checks: 9
Used Car Expert magazine:
A 2007 2.0 D with average mileage of 20,094 will be around £11,908.
