I’m looking for a reliable used car to buy. My maximum budget is £5000. I will only probably use this car over the next year, so don’t want to lose too much on it through depreciation. I may be emigrating early next year. My mileage next year will be 8000 to10000 miles max.

Well, given that you don’t specify what type of car you want there’s only really one choice. A Volkswagen Golf, with a diesel motor. Nothing resists depreciation like these cars and they are nice to drive and own. Reliability should be good, and if you’re careful about which one you get, you should be able to get very close to what you paid when you come to sell it after a year.
Check these out – you will see 2 identical cars – one with a year or two extra mileage, at the same price. It goes to show that a Golf is always a very good place to put your money. Also it should be a very quick sale if you need to sell it in a hurry.
