Hello
I have a Vokswagen Passat.
Can you tell me the correct ratio of anti freeze and water to use as I would like to change the old coolant for new coolant.
Thank you
Answer
First of all, you need to make sure you don’t mix the original VW antifreeze with any other type – they don’t live happily together and you’ll get all sorts of bubbles and unwanted bits in the cooling system.
So, either go to a VW dealer to buy the original VW stuff, or make sure you drain the system completely including the heater, and flush it out thoroughly before using a good quality non-VW antifreeze. The container will tell you the correct proportions of anti freeze and water to use – it depends on what temperature you are likely to need protection down to. A normal mix adequate for the UK is about 35% antifreeze to 65% water.
Don’t forget that all modern engines need antifreeze all year round – it protects against corrosion as well as freezing and lack of it is a common reason for blown head gaskets.
