PRODUCTION of the first Volkswagen Passat capable of more than 60mpg has just got under way.

Due in British showrooms from the end of the year, the next-generation BlueMotion model boasts average operating economy of 64.2mpg and is set to be one of the most efficient cars in its class.

Powered by a 1.6-litre TDI common rail diesel engine developing 105PS, the new model also has exhaust emissions of 114g/km - significantly lower than the car it replaces - despite accelerating to 62mph in 12.5 seconds and reaching a top speed of 119mph.

The gains come from modifications that include automatic stop-start and regenerative braking systems, longer gear ratios to cut engine speed and smoother aerodynamics through the use of a new grille and front bumper moulding.

Ride height is also 15mm lower than on the standard car and low rolling resistance tyres are fitted.

Despite its eco credentials, the new model will have climatic air conditioning, cruise control, CD stereo and a multifunction computer as standard and safety equipment will include six airbags, electronic stabilisation and anti-lock brakes.

Prices will start from £19,000 for the saloon and £20,000 for the estate.
