Volkswagen Polo
Co2: 119-139
Everyone loves the badge and the image. There are plenty of engine options and a very comfortable ride. But other manufactures have more fun drives and equipment for the money.
Best used eco buy: 1.4 TDI
Prices: 1.4 TDis from 2005 are now down at under £5,000 if you buy privately, with an average of 40,000 miles. A 2007 year car, heading for its M.O.T. but with warranty left will have average mileage of 23-25,000 and be between £7,200 and £8,300. But it will then lose up to 17% as it crosses it’s birthday. So the smart money goes on a car that’s just had its MOT and is around £6,500- £7,000.

The key check to make is to establish if the clutch feels heavy. Clutches can become heavy when the pedal box has cracked. But the clutch could just need replacing. Budget £200 - £400.

Kia Rio
Co2: 119-145
Fantastic value, well-equipped and very spacious. This is nearly an Astra-size car for Corsa money. Quality of build and engines is very good, especially for the money.
Best used eco buy: 1.5 CRDi
Prices: 2005 CRDis can start at £4,000, even if they are quite low mileage. But the mileages on these cars do vary significantly. The best value cars are the 2007 year models, which still have warranty, don’t yet need an M.O.T. and are only £6,500. Some 33% less than a new car.

The key check to make is to contact a main dealer and establish if the car you want has had its official recalls. One relating to the ABS and another relating to a potential fuel leak.
