ONE of the most efficient family cars yet built has gone on sale in Britain.
With Volkswagen’s latest TDI motor under its bonnet, the BlueMotion version of the Polo stretches a gallon of diesel fuel to more than 80 miles – a misely consumption that is claimed to allow a range of 800 miles on a tankful.
But with the help of higher gearing, regenerative braking and an automatic stop-start system, the pacesetting three-cylinder, 1.2-litre common rail engine also achieves a remarkably low CO2 emissions figure of 91g/km as well as having the power to accelerate from a standstill to 62 mph in 13.9 seconds and go on to a top speed of 107 mph.
Cosmetic changes that accompany the technology advances include bespoke bumpers, side skirts, an extended roof spoiler and 15-inch alloy wheels shod with low rolling-resistance tyres.
And comfort levels are high with manual air conditioning, cruise control and a leather steering wheel all fitted as standard. As with all models in the Polo range, safety features include four airbags, anti-lock braking and an electronic stabilisation programme.
Prices start at £14,445 for the three-door version and £15,045 for the five-door model.
