VOLVO’S rival to the BMW 3 Series will be priced from £23,295 when it goes on sale in the summer.
The Volvo S60 will be the first car on the market to feature an optional pedestrian detection system and the entry level model will be powered by a diesel engine capable of averaging 54mpg.
Top range versions will feature a high performance six cylinder petrol engine and will cost from £36,745.
All models in the three trim line up will be fitted with climate control, full colour information screens, climate control and alloy wheels.
Standard safety features include a device which automatically brakes the car in traffic to avoid rear end shunts as well as stability controls, side impact and anti-whiplash systems.
The S60 marks the debut of Volvo’s advanced pedestrian detection system which will be a £1,350 option on all models.
It works using a radar unit and a camera to detect objects in front of the car and is the first of its kind which can identify pedestrians.
At speeds of up to 21mph the system can stop the car completely in an emergency while at higher speeds it applies the brakes to reduce impact forces.
The S60 will also be available with Volvo’s D5 high powered diesel engine which develops 205hp resulting in a 0to 60mph acceleration of less than 7.8 seconds with average fuel consumption of 53.3mpg.
Sales are due to start in July with first deliveries expected in August.
