What to look for:

Check the paperwork to see if the cam belt has been changed on schedule. On most engines the cam belt must be changed within 10 years or 80,000 miles.

What it means:

If the cam belt and associated parts (such as the tensioner) have not been changed, and the mileage is over these boundaries, the cam belt is likely to fail soon. Usually the engine has to be replaced or at least re-built after a cam belt failure.

What to do

Ensure that the cam belt is changed before the car is driven anywhere if it is coming close to its interval. Changing the belt will cost £250 for petrols and £400 on diesels.

Here's an example fault on the VOLVO S80 (2007 - Present)

What to look for:

Test drive the vehicle. Find an open road and accelerate smartly. Check for sluggishness and hesitancy from the engine.

What it means:

This can indicate a problem with either the EGR (exhaust Gas Re-circulation) valve or the turbocharger. The turbo on this engine is of a very complex variable vane design. If it is not fully utilized (i.e. if it is driven in the same engine range all the time e.g. school runs etc) it can become defective through lack of use – similarly the EGR valve can stick. Both of these faults can lead to problems with turbo which can blow under some circumstances.

What to do

If you locate this fault it is advised to have the car inspected by a qualified mechanic. Budget £1000.00 for repairing this fault. If the car is under warranty (3 years or 60,000 miles) Volvo may replace the part gratis.
