VOLVO has for many years produced a huge number of engine and trim combinations for each model - so much so that dealers at one time had problems valuing them second hand.
The number has diminished a little but there are still 26 different V50 estates to choose from,so make sure you get the one you want.
I have been driving the latest - the 2.0-litre turbodiesel fitted with parent company Ford's latest Powershift automatic gearbox.
Like the Volkswagen DSG, this is excellent, using two electronically operated clutches for the smoothest and quickest of changes with economy as good as in a manual car.
The V50 has always been a great car to drive with excellent handling giving sharp roadholding and superb grip.
The ride is firm but rarely uncomfortable and even then only for a second or two on the worst surfaces.
Performance is excellent with a smooth take-off from rest and instant acceleration from most speeds in fully auto or using the manual mode. The engine is very smooth and quiet.
Interior
The gearbox is only available with the top spec R-Design Sport, which is a bit short-sighted. Of course, it does come very well equipped but the price tag is high.
Interior space is not that big, with little legroom behind if the driver is tall. The boot is also not that big for an estate car but reliability is second to none.
