IT may have been around since 2002 but the Volvo XC90 is still a class-leader in the premium SUV market.
Loved around the world, this rugged, beefy, all-wheel-drive beauty takes on challenges for fun and no task is too difficult.
And although very few owners will venture from the safety of the tarmac, it’s still reassuring to know that you have all those outstanding off-roading capabilities at your disposal should the need arise.
Boasting distinctive styling that makes it instantly recognisable, the XC90 has plenty of eye-catching features such as tinted windows, smart alloys and a power sunroof to name just a few.
And the quality of creature comforts within the cabin cannot fail to impress with luxurious leather seats - heated of course, a brilliant audio system that links to all the modern music devices, dual zone climate control and a highly efficient sat nav, although to be honest you wouldn’t mind getting lost in the XC90 for a few days!
There is ample room for five adults to travel inside the spacious cabin and this model had two additional seats folded flat to the boot floor so it could be converted quickly and easily into a seven-seater.
In addition there’s plenty of storage options, including a generously-sized boot and numerous smaller compartments throughout for all those knick knacks.
But luxury and wizardry aside, the XC90 is a vehicle that loves to perform and it doesn’t mind who its audience is.
For example, in busy rush hour traffic it proved deceptively agile and the high seated driving position meant excellent all-round visibility, which is vital with pedestrians and cyclists coming at you from all angles.
You will look like a complete professional when squeezing the larger-than-life vehicle into a tight parking space too as there are front and rear sensors along with a rear-view camera to assist.
But it’s out on the faster roads that the XC90 excels with superb road-holding - even in wet and windy conditions.
The 2.4-litre diesel-powered engine delivers ample oomph, with acceleration through the six-speed Geartronic transmission proving nice and responsive.
And should Mother Nature throw a snow storm in your path, the all-wheel-drive means you can still reach your destination safely.
Volvo has piled plenty of safety technology into the vehicle including anti-lock brakes, roll stability control, numerous airbags, dynamic stability and traction control and lots more.
Admittedly at just shy of £45,000 with all the optional extras, the XC90 is not a cheap vehicle, but when it comes to safety, performance, comfort and all-round value, it is still in pole position.
