VOLVO'S XC90 took on the best the USA could put up in a serious 4x4 competition - and beat the lot.
With their antiquated suspension and lack of electronic traction aids, the big yanks couldn't match the Volvo.
Of course, most owners are never even going to drive across a grass field, but always check for underside damage just in case.
Imost recently drove the D5 turbo diesel with six-speed automatic gearbox and it was a great combination. The other engine option is a six cylinder 2.9 or 3.2 but it is very thirsty.
The five cyinder diesel is smooth, quiet and powerful and the gearbox smooth changing, with a manual option which works quite well. Most have the automatic gearbox but there is a six speed manual. It's availabe with either 163 or 185bhp.
There's enough urge for overtaking and, as with most automatics, kickdown is slow, so it is better to drop into the Sport setting, which gives much more immediate response.
The ride is superb over all surfaces, the handling a little roly-poly as such vehicles tend to be and the level of grip is excellent, giving very quick cornering speeds.
Interior
Build and interior quality is excellent, with leather upholstery in upper models, full climate control, height and reach adjustable steering, huge alloy wheels, and the full electric pack.
It is very family orientated, with seven seats as standard - two folding easily and simply up out of the boot floor whenever they're needed.
