Many of the early small MPVs were actually less practical than the hatchback or estate versions available form the same range. But they struck a chord with Mums and Dads nationwide, so there are lots of very average small MPVS on the used market. The biggest problem is usually a lack of boot space and no more seats than a conventional car.
However, more recent small MPVs are a different kettle of fish. Wide-opening doors, plus moveable and varied seat options, allow you to tailor your seat and boot space for the job at hand. Taking the family away for the weekend? Take out a seat to create boot space. Giving your child’s friend a lift? Put it back… and do on.
Our top picks of the small MPVs are the Vauxhall Meriva, Ford C-Max and Peugeot 3008.
