Road Tax Bands / Car CO2 Emissions

How Road Tax is determined

All cars registered after March 2001 are taxed according to their emissions.  Older cars registered before that date are taxed according to their engine size as 1550cc and above or 1549cc and below.

Road Tax Bands

Cars registered after March 2001 will fall into one of the 13 tax bands A-M.  The most 'green' cars are in Road Tax Band A, going up to the highest CO2 emitters in Road Tax Band M.  The charts below shows how these Road Tax Bands relate to the amount of road tax duty (also called Vehicle Excise Duty or VED) you have to pay.

The chart below shows how the Road Tax rates have changed over the past few years and how your Road Tax (VED) costs are broken down according to the CO2 emissions (and therefore the Road Tax Band) of your car

What is the Co2 of your car?
