£4,000 and no worry

Review

Most car buyers believe that a small budget means they have to buy something old and that it’s a lucky dip in terms of reliability. But at the moment, that‘s not really true.

If you have just over £3,500 and are prepared to shop around there are a few 2 year old cars on the market that you can afford. A 2 year old car will have at least a year until its first MOT and a full year of manufacturer warranty left, so you should have nothing to fear. Here are three to consider:

Mitsubishi Colt

The new colt retains the earlier model's strengths - reliability and quality - but is more of an all rounder. One of the best looking and rare small cars.
Most economical: 1.1 55 mpg

Chevrolet Kalos

Big value small car, originally from Daewoo. Not a lot around and the Chevrolet rebadge has meant lower prices. Lots of space inside and good specifications.
Most economical: 1.2 SE 44mpg
