4x4 for Towing

Q&A

Question

I am looking for a 4 x 4 to tow a fully laden 2-horse box that is also manageable about town. The vehicle must have a maximum towing capacity with a braked trailer of at least 2.5 tonnes. Land Rover Discovery and Defender have a capacity of 3.5 tonnes but are bigger than we need on a day-to-day basis. The Jeep Cherokee has a towing capacity of nearly 2.7 tonnes and is smaller than the two Land Rovers. Can you suggest any other options?

Answer

Kevin,

Do you really need 2.5 tonnes? Or will 2.0 tonnes do? I am testing a 4wd Subaru Legacy 3.0. It is a fantastic car; fast, easy about town, well equipped and well put together. It meets your brief perfectly, apart from the extra bit of towing weight.

For 2.5 tonnes, you can also look at the Volkswagen Touareg, Volvo XC70 or Toyota Land Cruiser. They are all premium vehicles, but according to sources in the trade, the Toyota (petrol variants only) prices are softening, so you might get a bargain if you haggle a little bit.
