Question

Hello,

I have about 4k to spend on a family car. We have 2 children, a dog and do a lot of camping - space is a major issue - what cars would you recommend?

Many thanks in advance.

Answer

Hi,

You strike me as being open-minded. So what about making a big American statement: with that budget you can buy a 1981 Chevy Winnebago Warrior 21!

No, it won’t be that practical on the school run, but it will make camping more fun.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is also the definition of spacious but you would need to buy a 1999/2000 model and the running and repair costs might be too much.

A Peugeot 406 estate from 2004 (2.0 litre petrol) is probably more the sort of advice I should give.

You should also check out the Vauxhall Vectra estate from the same year. The Vectra is so big, I believed for a short time, that you had to have an HGV licence to drive one.

Keywords: Peugeot 406, Vauxhall Vectra, family estates, cheap family cars, family cars £4000, 4k family cars, camping car
