Cars for tall people

Q&A

Question

I'm a 19 year old guy with a real problem with finding cars that I can drive. I have long legs even though I'm not that tall and it means I have difficulty fitting in cars. It's not unusual for me to not fit. When I went to the London Motor Show 2006 I could only get in about 3 cars properly. I don't even fit behind the wheel of the Hummer H2 let alone a Vauxhall Corsa! The main problem with cars is the large section on the underneath of the steering column. When I lift off the clutch my knee hits on the section there. I'm also a fairly fast driver, so looking for something with decent performance, but I also need something with a good amount of space inside and in the boot. To make it even harder for me to find a car I have spinal problems as well which means that I need very comfortable seats with good lumbar support.
What can you recommend for me?
Thanks

Answer

I don’t just sympathise with your problem. At 6”3’ with long legs and a short body, I can empathise with you.

The key thing to look for is not the car, but the seat. One of the cars I found most comfortable was my Dad’s old Vauxhall Belmont GL. For some reason you sat much lower than in any other Belmont.

Another excellent car for my legs was the Toyota Celica. Again you sat very close to the car floor and the Celica also had a deep foot well.

So, look for cars with sports seats. They are great for support and you sit low, which straightens the legs. Start with the Celica and Honda Integra.
