Car warranty?

Q&A

Question

Hi,

My car has just reached 3 years old, is it really worth the cost of taking out a repairs warranty?

It is a Toyota Rav 4 2ltr Diesel 27000 miles.

Answer

Hi

I can understand your reluctance because Toyotas are very reliable.

Plus the car is low mileage, (real average mileage for a 2005 Diesel Rav is about 33,000 miles).

But any car can break down and yours is worth around £10,500 (£9,000 if you are in a rush, perhaps £11,000 if you valet it, wait for the right buyer and are a bit of a saleman at heart). One major engine problem that stops it running reduces it to a value of £0.

A warranty will probably cost less than £30 a month* and the top claim for a Toyota is £1,684.15**

So by spending £300 you are protecting an asset worth £10,000 and avoiding bills that are potentially 5 times bigger than your premium.
